There are massive amounts of data all over the world, but data can only do so much. Most of the time, the immense quantity of data is overwhelming and difficult to manage. However, the use of analytics with data is what transforms any data set into an informed decision, usually benefiting society, businesses, and the government. The federal government retrieves a great amount of structured and unstructured data from citizens daily, organizing, managing, and extracting insights from the datasets. Analyzing data is very important and has a lot of influence on the economy and citizens. Thus, insights from data analysis help improve the country, whether it concerns the national Security, national academic education, and national Health care, etc. In this post, I will explain the use of data analytics in the Government.
Data Analytics In Todays World
The government uses data to improve the national security, protecting citizens from criminal activities. There are violent crimes, fraudulent actions, illegal activities, and potential terrorist attacks taking place every day. Therefore, to prevent individuals from other harmful people’s behavior, the government incorporates the use of their data with sophisticated software and applications. For example, to alleviate the issue regarding illegal drugs, the government uses data and analytics to trace down the source and to mend the problem according to their findings. So, with the data that the government collects and advanced technology, they are able to visualize the data by creating geospatial maps, line graphs with trend data, and even time lapse maps that show how the drug epidemic has evolved over time. Therefore, the government is able to implement their actions where needed, whether it’s building more treatment centers or enforcing more police. So, combining data analytics and technology allow the government to help with security, where it’s physical or through cyber platforms.
Moreover, data analytics enhances the education setting. There is an enormous amount of data regarding education, therefore, the government is always trying to possess new methods in raising academic standings, especially in mathematics and science. Through the cloud, there are now many more opportunities for students to learn. Whether through the traditional school environment and distant learning, massive amounts of data are readily available for students. Data analytics are used by the government to develop a more advanced nation. Through the analytics behind graduation rates, national average exam scores, curriculum by state, etc., the government implements their improved strategies to impact the national education. Through the government’s decisions, the country is able to improve their knowledge in every academic department.
Additionally, another way the government implements the use of data analytics to improve the country is for medical purposes. The government works with different healthcare agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control, to improve the overall health of the nation. For instance, with the large amounts of data regarding medicine and health, the government uses data to trace down illnesses and find new innovations to progress healthcare. For example, the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) was able to find a more efficient way in developing a genome map to treat neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve cells. With the use of advanced technology and large data analytical tools, TGen, along with the Dell EMC Cloudera Apache Hadoop platform, was able to reduce the normal genome mapping time of approximately six months to less than four hours. This innovative method allows researchers and clinicians to improve patient care. Data is not only used in research but also used in various ways in the health care department. For that reason, the government uses data to track the spread of diseases, predict epidemics, and promote healthier lifestyles. Ultimately, big data is making the world a better, healthier place.
All in all, insights from data analytics allow the government to make smarter decisions in making the country a better, more efficient place. Data is used for an unfathomable amount of departments and purposes. There is a lot of power behind data analytics and Big Data, and the government has a lot of influence by choosing how to operate with them.
